guilty in ‘difficult case’
Police dog handler Mark Johnson, who says he accidentally left two German Shepherd police dogs
to die of heatstroke in the back of his car last summer was found guilty this week.
PC Johnson of the Nottinghamshire police was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £2,500 costs after what a district judge called ‘an extremely difficult case’ which, he said, reflected poorly
on the force's attitude to officers with mental health problems.
PC Johnson had claimed to be suffering from mental health problems at the time.
Nottingham magistrates court heard that the dogs – Jay-Jay and Jet – died in ‘excruciating pain’
after Johnson forgot he had not taken them out of his Ford Mondeo estate on 30 June last years
. Outside temperatures that day reached 29.3C (almost 90F).
