Ch Witchgate Sounds Terrific
‘I’m lost for words! I didn’t think that he would win,’ said Sharon Sutherland at last week’s Junior Stakes Finals, hosted by Petplan. ‘Petplan has run an amazing day
everyone’s been very friendly and welcoming.’
After long a detailed consultation among the judges the announcement was finally made
that the Shar Pei was the Petplan Juniors Stakes winner for 2010. Sharon Sutherland’s
clearly did not believe it at first and, in fact, I spoke to her two days later
and she was
still on cloud nine.
The final was a master class demonstration of how such an event should be run.
The Petplan staff were attentive and incredibly efficient and the ring stewards kept the complicated procedures flowing smoothly while, Andrew Brace on the microphone kept us amply supplied with facts and figures about each and every dog.
A great day from a company dedicated to dogs.

Daisy is a youngster who is being trained to help identify cancerous tumours and high
and low blood sugars simply by the power of her smell, while Kaya works in the Aspen Highlands and last winter was dispatched by helicopter to locate a person buried beneath
the snow. Meanwhile, a young team are being trained in Australia to spend 16 months
with prison inmates as part of a correctional programme
to reduce re-offending behaviour
and assist rehabilitation.
These incredible stories from across the world are made even more extraordinary
because all of the above rescuers are dogs.
These real-life accounts will be shown on a new TV series, Extraordinary Dogs,
which has been filmed across more than 16 countries and is being aired on national television from 1st February. Questions such as; can a dog really anticipate impending danger,
is a dog’s sense of smell truly 100 times greater than ours, and what are
the extreme conditions which dogs can survive in, will all be tackled in this
13-part series which is being sponsored by Eukanuba.
Premiering on Channel 5 at 7.30pm, each episode of this new TV series will tackle the
myths and realities about dogs and the science behind what makes them so extraordinary.
The series provides commentary from leading experts around the world including renowned vets, rescue workers and specialist trainers, who are able to offer viewers a unique insight
into how the amazing character and inherent talents of these animals
can be nurtured and developed.
The new TV series will directly engage with viewers by providing each owner the opportunity to enter an online competition explaining why they think their dog is extraordinary. This competition allows people to create their very own personalised advertisement where their pet can be pictured as the ‘star’. Proud dog owners should visit www.extraordinarydogs.tv* to upload photographs and a description about why their dog is extraordinary to have their ad showcased on Eukanuba’s website. Eukanuba is also offering viewers the chance to win a number of other fabulous prizes in return for their extraordinary story at www.extraordinarydogs.tv*.
