crufts entry holds up well
The Kennel Club has released the entry figures for this year’s Crufts show. The total entry of 21,029 dogs for Crufts 2012 is only 328 dogs less than 2011 when the equivalent entry was announced as 21,357.
The reduction of only 1.5 per cent on last year’s recorded entry compares favourably with the general fall in UK championship show entries over the last year. That overall fall is believed to have been just over three per cent.
The Kennel Club will be delighted at such a result especially as it did receive a certain amount of flak for its new policy of not sending out as many schedules as in previous years. In fact, 1,388 dogs have also been entered from overseas, a 13 percent increase over last year. These dogs are from 38 different countries including Germany, Latvia, Canada, the United States, Thailand, and for the first ever time, from Chile.

poodle of the year - dreams become reality!
The idea of a ‘Poodle of the Year’ had been tossed around for several years, then finally on Saturday 14th January 2012 Jackie Kitchener & her committee of The Miniature Poodle Club turned a pipe dream into reality. What a resounding success!
There were 4 competitions, Poodle Puppy of the Year, Standard Poodle of the Year, Miniature Poodle of the Year & Toy Poodle of the Year with a Grand Final of the title of Poodle of the Year 2011. The format was a straight match knockout in each size with the judges not divulging their choice to each other in any of the matches, instead writing their winners number, passing this to John or Angie Harry-Griffiths for the announcement to then be read out by Andrew.

german shepherd dog - a passion for life
by Kathleen Powell
A Review by HELEN - DAVENPORT WILLIS
A couple of years ago, a budding author by the name of Kathleen Powell who was embarking on writing a book on German Shepherd Dogs, contacted my husband, Dr Malcolm Willis for permission to quote excerpts from his highly acclaimed book, “The GSD A Genetic History of the Breed” which was published in l991 by H. F & G Witherby. Malcolm gave Kathleen permission to do so, providing not too much of his work was copied and that when her book was finished, a copy of it was sent to us. The author duly kept her promise.
So it was, before Christmas, I received a copy of the book from the author, as promised. The GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG – A PASSION FOR LIFE is published by Bullrush Publications, it is 278 pages and is illustrated in colour throughout. Priced at £29.95, but currently available from Our Dogs at the opening offer of £25.00 including carriage, there is a percentage of every book sold being donated to the GSD Epilepsy Fund, which is a generous gesture by the author.*
On handling the book, I liked the feel of it and found it instantly attractive. Once I started to read it, I found it well written, easy to read, comprehensive and interesting. It is clearly apparent throughout it that the author adores the breed, evident not only from what she writes but also from how it is written. She shows great empathy and warmth towards this most intelligent and wonderful of breeds. Kathleen has shared her life with Shepherds, obviously knows the breed well and her writing reflects this.
I thoroughly enjoyed this publication which discusses key aspects of breed care and welfare and I recommend it to not only those newcomers considering buying a puppy, but also to those who love the breed as there is something for everyone within the pages.
Congratulations must go the author on a first class book. I sure she must be delighted to see the results of all her hard work and dedication finally in print. I am sure my husband would have approved of her efforts.
*All profits will be donated to canine epilepsy research until the target of £10,000 has been achieved.

International judges
discussed by KC
Members of the Kennel Club Judges Sub Committee recently held a meeting with representatives of the FCI to see if it might be possible to reach some compromise on the mutual recognition of judges at challenge certificate level - as between FCI counties and the UK.
This summit meeting was occasioned by the recent decision of the FCI to abandon, from 1st January this year, its previous agreement that allowed Britain’s ‘top sixteen’ judges to officiate at FCI International CACIB level in all breeds. The top sixteen were previously allowed to do that, whether or not they were approved to award CCs to those breeds in the UK. That was an arrangement entered into by the FCI some 10 years ago to help some of their member countries that wanted to make greater use of British judges who were more experienced than some FCI judges, even though the British judges were not yet approved to award CCs to certain breeds in the UK.

Future of dog breeding in your hands, warns KC
The Kennel Club is rallying all dog breeders and owners in Wales to respond to a fresh consultation being held by the Welsh Assembly Government, to determine the future of dog breeding. The call by the Kennel Club comes after a week of meetings with Assembly Members and Welsh dog breeders to discuss the issue.
The Kennel Club met with Welsh Assembly representatives to discuss the issue and ask that they carefully consider how effective enforcement can be assured without the danger of local authorities adopting a ‘low hanging fruit’ approach of conducting inspections on breeders whose licence fee is easy to obtain, as opposed to dealing with the more difficult, unscrupulous breeders who may require more time and resources.

Downton Abbey appearance for Reedlands Retrievers
THE team at Reedlands Retrievers had their moment of TV fame recently when appearing in the Christmas special of the hugely successful Downton Abbey.
Well known for their demonstrations at Game Fairs and country events throughout the country, Reedlands Retrievers is led by Dave Small and supported by performance dog food experts, Alpha Feeds.
Said Dave: ‘When we were asked if we wanted to participate in the shooting scenes we were very excited about being involved but we were not sure whether we would actually appear in the programme or not. When we tuned in over the festive season and saw we were actually there on the TV it was great and felt such an honour to be involved in what has become such a popular series. It was also great to see that the dogs looked so well.”
