 kennel club seeks your views

KC launches questionnaire to gather dog owners’ views on registration

The Kennel Club has launched an online questionnaire to gather the views of dog owners, breeders, exhibitors and other canine competitors on what they want and expect from the Kennel Club registration system.
The questionnaire is part of a consultation promised at this year’s Kennel Club AGM in May. This arose following a proposal from KC Honorary Life Member Mrs Judith Robin-Smith that the Club should consider the introduction of a two-tier registration system.

 european dog show 2012

At the time of going to press, the European dog show has received just under 2000 entries.
The final entries closing date is in September and OUR DOGS has now received the following press release from the organisers:

The preparations for the European Dog Show 2012 are now in full progress.

Four years ago when we applied and obtained the right to organize this important event we did not even think about recession and the economic difficulties European countries will be confronted in the future. We did not think even in our worse dreams about the unfair attacks of the animal protection activists against Romania and the EDS 2012.

We have tried, in spite of all these difficulties to proceed to build up a good show,
well organized and enjoyable for exhibitors, judges, visitors.

The generous venues of "Romexpo" in Bucharest gave us the certainty that we will have an ideal space to host this important FCI event hosted for the first time by Romania. With the technical support of "Show tailors company",
Eukanuba as official sponsor and "Our Dogs" as principal media partners
we are convinced that our show in Bucharest will be a success.

We are ready to face this event even if for the moment the number of dogs entered is lower then expected.

Many voices are saying they are afraid to travel across Romania because is supposed to be dangerous.
To all of them we can say: Romania is not an "aggressive" country. Many friends and exhibitors,
judges have already been to our shows and they left only with good memories.

We do not have highways but the roads are good and if you will decide to come we suggest you travel by night when the traffic is low.

Do not forget! The deadline to enter the show is September 3rd 2012.
For entries and all other information please do visit the official web site of EDS 2012 or,
if necessary do not hesitate to contact us directly. We have all answers to your problems or questions.

You are all welcome to Romania!

The EDS 2012 organizing committee.

‘Fur kid’ phenomenon - Brits choose dogs over sprogs

Two in five say owning a dog is a happy alternative to having children. A quarter prefer going out with their dog to their children. Eight in ten say their dog is loving and attentive when out and about. Just over 50% say this is true of their partner.
Kennel Club calls for more places to allow dogs to join the family, during the Kennel Club’s Open for Dogs Week 20-26 August.

To nominate your favourite dog friendly venue or town for the Kennel Club’s Open for Dogs Awards, visit www.openfordogs.org.uk. The deadline for nominations is 31st August.

Moorlands plans to be competitive
with its Absolute Best!

The founders of Moorlands Pet Foods have decided that within their terms of business is a clause stating they will never ever sell to grocery chains and large pet retailer groups.
Moorlands, the Staffordshire based company told OUR DOGS: ‘With the amount of turmoil in the market our conversations with pet care trade specialists has revealed a growing resentment with companies that use them to build their brand then sell to PAH and others and draw away customers from their shops. They are a little tired of giving loyalty and getting very little loyalty in return.
Moorlands Pet Foods has been established to offer solutions to all of these issues. For further details of the Moorlands Pet Foods range go to www.moorlandspetfoods.com.

Why the BARF diet can help senior dogs

The rising popularity of the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet has seen many dog owners switch to this type of feeding over recent years. As well as helping dogs with intolerances and skin allergies, this type of diet can also be beneficial for senior dogs.
BARF follows the principle of evolution that dogs are descended from wolves and other wild dogs and although humans have changed their external appearance as well as special skills (guarding, protecting, hunting or lap-dogs), the dog’s digestive system however remains unchanged. Dogs belong to the family of carnivores, i.e. meat eaters with sharp incisors designed for more than just grinding vegetables and grain.

To order your food online or for any further information on Albion Meat Products, visit our website: www.albionmeatproducts.co.uk or telephone: 01386 554095.

Choosing the right bed for the older dog as 3P Enterprise launch their new range of raised soft beds from Maelson.

There is no doubt that every dog whatever its age or size, likes to have their own special place to sleep and if you don’t want to have to share the duvet with your pooch, then choosing the right pet bed is a priority for any discerning dog owner.
It is important that dogs have a quiet, comfortable dry spot to sleep and that having a good night’s rest, aids their health and wellbeing hopefully leading to a longer life span. Choosing the right bed for your dog is therefore essential.
For more details visit www.generationpets.co.uk or contact 3P Enterprise Ltd to find your nearest stockist. www.3penterprise.co.uk.

 judges envelopes

For some time the numbers of judge's reports we receive by post have been receding and the vast majority of show reports are now sent to OUR DOGS by email.
For this reason - and with the imminent large rises in the cost of first and second class mail - we will no longer send bulk mailings of envelopes to show secretaries.
If you are a judge with appointments this year - or even next year - and you will be posting your report to OUR DOGS, please call along to the stand at any general championship show and collect your pre-paid envelopes.
Alternatively, if you are a secretary and wish to collect envelopes for your show, they will be happy to oblige. And don't worry if you don't get to the champ shows, simply email Ann Cross on across@ourdogs.co.uk or call her on 0161 709 4550. Show reports by email to showreports@ourdogs.co.uk.
Envelopes will be posted in the normal way in the short term but this will cease as from May 1st. As ever both OUR DOGS and our readers are grateful for the efforts of all judges in submitting reports and trust that everyone understand the reasons for the changes.
We live in a changing world!

48 mins - Turid Rugaas
Norwegian dog trainer Turid Rugaas is a noted expert on canine body language, notably "calming signals" which are signs dogs give other dogs and humans that denote stress. These are dogs’ attempt to defuse situations that otherwise might result in fights or aggression. The DVD shows footage of many calming signals, how dogs use them, and how you can use them to calm your dog. This is the DVD format and companion to the popular book, "On Talking Terms with Dogs."
(Note - this is not a professionally filmed DVD rather one done by dedicated amateur dog people; however, it does an excellent job of illustrating the canine body language subjects it addresses.)
