Inquiry into Dog Control and Welfare moves forward

In May this year the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee (EFRA) launched an enquiry to consider the measures which might be taken to tackle irresponsible dog ownership announced for consultation by Defra in April. Launching the inquiry, Committee Chair, Anne McIntosh MP said, ‘Attacks by out of control dogs are on the increase with tragic impacts on individuals, families and communities.
Our inquiry will look closely at whether the Government is doing enough to tackle the problem of irresponsible dog owners and to improve the welfare of all dogs, including so-called status dogs. We also want to find out whether enough is being done to improve the health and welfare of dogs bred for sale.’

 Award for Our Dogs MD!

At the recent European Dog Show 2012 held in Bucharest, OUR DOGS Managing Director Vince Hogan received a special award from the Romanian Kennel Club. He is seen here at the official dinner with the Vice President Petru Muntean making the presentation.
The Romanian Kennel Club staged an excellent event overall and OUR DOGS had been a key factor in helping to raise the profile of the show and also working with the President Cristian Stefanescu and Vice President Petru Muntean in highlighting the problem of stray dogs in the country. Vince chaired a special press conference on the first day of the show where a number of Romanian dog enthusiasts and campaigners attended. A special protocol was signed with a foundation which is working to help the stray dogs.

 Vet tests to be extended?

During the course of providing evidence to the EFRA Committee of MP’s last week (see our front page report in this week’s issue) both Professor Sir Patrick Bateson and Professor Sheila Crispin remarked favourably on the Vet Tests introduced at Crufts this year.
At the meeting, Professor Crispin said: ‘I am sure it will be extended to occasional checks if not regular checks on other breeds. So it won’t just be the High Profile Breeds. Which will also mean that the High Profile Breeds won’t feel that they’re being particularly targeted.’

It has also been reported that Professor Crispin later said that this idea had been discussed by the KC Dog Health Group and might even be introduced ‘before Crufts’. She is also reported as approving of this move and believing that one of the reasons for it was that supporters of the High Profile Breeds had felt discriminated against.

 judges envelopes

For some time the numbers of judge's reports we receive by post have been receding and the vast majority of show reports are now sent to OUR DOGS by email.
For this reason - and with the imminent large rises in the cost of first and second class mail - we will no longer send bulk mailings of envelopes to show secretaries.
If you are a judge with appointments this year - or even next year - and you will be posting your report to OUR DOGS, please call along to the stand at any general championship show and collect your pre-paid envelopes.
Alternatively, if you are a secretary and wish to collect envelopes for your show, they will be happy to oblige. And don't worry if you don't get to the champ shows, simply email Ann Cross on across@ourdogs.co.uk or call her on 0161 709 4550. Show reports by email to showreports@ourdogs.co.uk.
Envelopes will be posted in the normal way in the short term but this will cease as from May 1st. As ever both OUR DOGS and our readers are grateful for the efforts of all judges in submitting reports and trust that everyone understand the reasons for the changes.
We live in a changing world!
