Front page story - Key issues discussed at Kennel Club AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Kennel Club at the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair attracted around 200 members for a long and what at first sight appeared to be a complex agenda.
In the event it was long but not especially controversial. This may have been because there were fewer members in attendance as, for the first time, every item on the agenda could be voted on through proxy forms which had been circulated in advance of the meeting. As no amendments are allowed now that the Kennel Club is a Company Limited by Guarantee, discussion of any item is inevitably curtailed.

MPs urge further action to stop dog attacks

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) last week endorsed draft laws to extend dangerous dogs offences to attacks on private property and on assistance dogs. However, the MPs criticised the Government for failing to bring in wider measures, including Dog Control Notices, to tackle out-of-control dogs.
Launching the Committee's pre-legislative scrutiny report on the Draft Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Bill (HC 95) Committee Chair, Anne McIntosh MP, said: 'Our February Dog Control and Welfare report concluded that current laws had comprehensively failed to tackle irresponsible dog ownership.'

DNA testing discount for breed clubs

The Animal Health Trust (AHT) is launching a new discount scheme for breed clubs, which it hopes will encourage dog owners to make the most of its parentage and DNA profiling tests.
The veterinary charity offers a wide range of services to improve dog health; including tests for over 20 specific conditions in 48 different breeds.
This new scheme is specifically for breed clubs, and offers group savings on DNA profiling and parentage tests. The more club members that participate in the deal and submit DNA samples, the higher the overall savings for that club will be.

KC supports project on future of open shows

The Kennel Club is supporting a project, run by the Dog Union, investigating the future of Open Shows and how these shows can be supported to ensure their continued success.
Open Shows are the training ground for future judges and those starting out in their dog showing career, as well as being a platform for up and coming dogs on the show scene to develop, and the Dog Union and the Kennel Club have been concerned for some time about the seemingly dwindling numbers of entries for these shows and the number of societies running them.

40,000 'hits' each month for I Judge Dogs

There are still many judges who find it difficult to appreciate that the I Judge Dogs website is not just a useful service for show secretaries and exhibitors but that its objective is to put dogs and exhibitors first.
Perhaps they do not realise that I Judge Dogs is against:

  • Advertising
  • Swapping judging appointments
  • Judging 'faces' or putting up dogs simply because others have done so
  • Writing or asking for appointments

I Judge Dogs is for

  • Openness
  • Honesty
  • Transparency
  • Knowledge
  • Expertise
  • Experience

For these reasons the web site provides full CVs which set out clearly the knowledge and experience of potential judges as well as important and valuable information for them and for show secretaries- and for exhibitors too.

£100 caption competition

At the launch of "Jilly's Jolly Jaunt", held last month at the Kennel Club, various inventive ideas were discussed for individual fund raising.
Moray Armstrong suggested to Andrew Brace that they could amuse people by posing outside the hallowed portals of Clarges Street and use the resulting photograph for a caption competition.
Readers are asked to come up with an appropriate caption for the above photograph and submit it, along with a cheque made out to JILLY'S JAUNT for £5 per caption. Captions should be humorous (and printable!) and the one considered the most appealing by Moray and Andrew will win a £100 cash prize, donated by the subjects of the photograph.
Entries should be should be sent to Andrew Brace at 30 Cefn Road, Blackwood, Gwent NP12 1QA and consist of the caption/s, the sender's name and postal address and a cheque made out to JILLY'S JAUNT for £5 per caption. Entries will close on Monday 10th June 2013.

Dog survives Oklahoma tornado

An elderly woman whose home was destroyed by the Oklahoma tornado found her pet dog among the rubble during a live TV interview.
The footage of Barbara Garcia came as fellow survivors began reliving the terror they felt while winds of up to 200mph obliterated their neighbourhoods.
Mrs Garcia was standing among the twisted wreckage of her home as she was interviewed about her experiences by a reporter from CBS.
'I was sitting on the stool holding my dog,' she said. This was the game plan all through the years, to go in that little bathroom (together). I rolled around a little bit and when it stopped I was right there (and) that stove cooker is what I saw. I never lost consciousness and I hollered for my little dog and he didn't answer, he didn't come, so I know he's in here somewhere.'

European Dog Show 2013 - Geneva

Check out a great video promoting this years
European Dog Show in Geneva:

Iconic 80s poster is reborn

The iconic Athena Man and Baby poster has been recreated 27 years after it was initially captured and this time, with a handful of puppy love.
Guide Dogs (www.guidedogs.org.uk) teamed up with Mr Great Britain International, athlete and model Suki Hayer, to produce their version of Britain's best ever selling poster.
Man and Baby (L'Enfant) was shot in London on 26 May 1986 and sold 5million copies. Guide Dogs' version was captured at their National Breeding Centre in Leamington Spa and depicts the same serene moment as L'Enfant where a topless man gazes down at a new born, which in this case is an adorable Labrador puppy!
