West Of England Ladies' Kennel Club Champ Show cancelled
Due to the escalation of the foot & mouth disease outbreak the W.E.L.K.S. Championship Show has been cancelled.
The Society have issued a statement which follows:
"The WELKS Committee has great sympathy with the farming community and our showground being situated just beneath the Malverns was considered, by us, to be in particular danger, the nearest outbreak being only 12 miles away. The executive at Three Counties, were naturally unable to guarantee the availability of the showground for the end of April so decision was made to cease preparations for the show.
Following that initial decision the Committee gave extremely careful consideration to the possibility of re-scheduling the championship show later in the year. The only available vacancy at the Showground to accomodate a show the size of WELKS is the week beginning the 17th September - as it happens a week when there is no other general champ show. Research revealed that there are twelve Breed Club Champ Shows for breeds which we schedule with CC's, a Gundog Group Champ Show and eighteen General Canine Societies Open Shows too. (Without taking into consideration any that are already re-scheduled to that weekend). It was considered unfair to invade their weekend and put so many shows in jeopardy.
Additionally, after returning all this April's entry the Society would have to re-do everything that had been done in the first three months of the year and then do it all again ready for April 2002.
The costs of cancellation are not inconsiderable as we have already incurred substantial outlay which is irrecoverable as we were not insured for this eventuality. There will have been no cost to exhibitors as in the main they will have received their own cheques back and Trade Stand Holders have already received their refunds."
The entry fees for the April show will be returned but this will obviously take time. Meanwhile exhibitors are requested to be patient and give the Secretary and Treasurer the time to complete this unenviable task and please refrain from telephoning the secretary.
