Obituary
Mrs. Eva Harkness

It was with great sadness that I learnt of the death, after a short illness, of Mrs. Eva Harkness. Eva has been a dedicated breeder of Golden Retrievers with the Mandingo affix since the early 1950s.

Though living in Northern Ireland she made many visits to shows in this country, showing her dogs and as a judge, and the many friends she made here, as well as at home, will miss her very much. I knew her from the very early days, and valued her friendship, and have so many happy memories of the great fun she was, and she was always prepared to give advice to those who wanted it.

Amongst the many winners she produced both at shows and at Field Trials, there were some outstanding Champions in both countries and in Eire. Her first influential Stud dog was bought from Lottie Pilkington called Alresford Nice Fella, and though he did not have a title he produced several Champions. The mating to a bitch Eva had from Lucille Sawtell called Lucky Charm of Yeo started the line of Mandingo Champions, such as Irish Ch. Mandingo Marianne, Irish Ch. Mandingo Marigold, owned by Mrs. Heather Avis (when mated to Ch. Camrose Cabus Christopher produced Ch. and Swedish Ch. Glenavis Barman - a Group winner here), Irish Ch. Mandingo Beau Ideal, Irish Ch. Mandingo Beau Legionaire, Ch. and Irish Ch. Mandingo Buidhe Colum (jointly owned by Eva and Lucille Sawtell) who won numerous CCs.
The latest CC and green star winner was the lovely Mandingo Spellbinder, (always handled by Mr Massey) which Miss Wilcock and I made Best in show at the All Ireland Club Show two years ago.

Our deepest sympathy to her husband, Bernie, and to her children - she will long be remembered with much affection.
