Obituary - Mary Wombey

It is with deep regret that I have to report that Mary Wombey passed away peacefully during the night of 2nd/3rd December in Bedford Hospital.

Mary who was a school mistress by profession, commenced by owning two Irish Setters, but she soon graduated to purchasing a Gordon from June Maddox called Haze Jan (Speygrounds Minstrel x Speygrounds Classic) which she made up into a Show Champion. It is from Haze Jan that she started her line and the Rowancrag affix. From this dog she produced Sh. Ch. Rowancrag Shadrach, who in turn was the father of her famous Sh. Ch. Haar Bencruachan, the dam was Luing of the Haar. These dogs appear in a large number of present day Gordons and so have had a great influence on the breed.

Mary was a leading authority on Gordons, in fact I would further say, she was an encyclopaedia of Gordons being able to recite pedigrees of any given Gordon and was able to do this even when she was into her late seventies.

Mary, together with Bob, who died quite a few years ago, judged at Championship Shows and was not averse to staying out in the pouring rain to judge. Both Mary and Bob recognised that Gordons are best seen outdoors, where only extreme heat seems to bother them.

She was a Hon. Life member of the Gordon Setter Association and an Honorary Vice President of the British Gordon Setter Club. Her husband Bob was Hon. Secretary for many years of the BGSC.

It is the passing of an era for a lady who was well known to many famous people many of which were her contemporaries.

The funeral will take place at 12 midday on Thursday 15th December at Wavendon Church in Buckinghamshire. There is a request for no flowers, but anyone wishing to make a donation should do so to the United Gordon Setter Rescue.

Mary and Bob - who died in 92 - had owned Gordons since 1962.

Their first one was Sh Ch Haze Jan bred by June Maddox. Their second was a bitch, who again gained her title, Sh Ch Flicka of Fanfair. Bob and Mary bred their first litter in 1965 from these two and the “Rowancrags” were started.

I personally remember Mary telling me about her beloved Ben, Sh Ch Haar Bencruachan sired by Sh Ch Rowancrag Shadrach, who can be found in the pedigrees of Winterwood, Lourdace, Swanley, Carek and all the kennels based on these lines today.

Another person who had such great knowledge of the Gordon Setter has been lost, all our sympathies to Mary’s family

Mary’s funeral will be held on 15th Dec at Wavendon Church, family flowers only please but donations can be made to the United Gordon Setter Rescue.
