New Sheepdog centre opens

A farm that featured on the BBC programme One Man and His Dog is opening in Lancashire, where Farmer Thomas Longton has set up the centre at Lee End Farm in Quernmore, near Lancaster, with his wife Anne.

The couple have transformed a disused barn into a luxury residential centre with the help of Defra, who awarded the couple £70,000 to convert the barn and eight kennels.

Mr Thomas said he also wants to encourage newcomers to the sport and also plans to use the barn to offer educational holidays.

Jason Robinson, of the Rural Development Service in the North West, said: "Thomas Longton is an internationally renowned sheepdog trainer who has run training courses in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal. Now that dogs can travel to this country from the continent many of his overseas students as well as British sheepdog trainers will be keen to use this new facility.

"The project also benefits the local economy by generating income for the region from increased tourism and bringing business to local shops, pubs and restaurants."
