George joined the North Western Old English Sheepdog Club in 1977. He progressed from committee member to chairman before resigning in 2004. He had been made a life member previously. In the 70s, George and Mary his wife owned and showed Tezleconda Blue Boy and Shenadene Sir Galahad, Leo and Davie successfully.
George was show manager of the Club from 1985. He judged the NWOES Club Championship Show (bitches) in March of this year, determined to do this after having a pace maker fitted 2 weeks previously, finding his CC bitch in Zottles Encore.
He previously judged his first championship show at Darlington, then for the Old English Sheepdog of Scotland. He judged three times at Switzerland, the last time in Lavsanne at the Canine Internationale where his Best of Breed was Reat’s Cosmopolitan went res Best In Show.
Most of all George loved his OES and talking to exhibitors, he always had a story to tell.
Previously George helped the local Evening Telegraph to run a ‘Scruffs’ show, proceeds to the RSPCA.
He was secretary and show manager for Scunthorpe Canine Association, holding successful shows at Quibell Park for many years, show manager at Westwoodside Agricultural Show. He last judged at Cleethorpes Canine Association on 9th October, judging breeds and groups and enjoyed it so much.
He had also stewarded at Driffield Championship Show for 18 years and was a well known and well liked person.
He was well known at the Gill Harwood Old English Sheepdog Rescue Show by either stewarding or helping any way he could.
George will be sadly missed in the dog world. Our condolences to his wife Mary and son David.
The funeral was held at Woodlands Crematorium on 9th November, attended by many friends including ‘Bobtail’ exhibitors. It was a celebration of his life.
