Isis, one of the greyhounds rescued following the closure of the track
FOLLOWING THE closure earlier this year of the infamous Abbey Moor greyhound track at Glastonbury, Somerset, a local Greyhound and Lurcher rescue organisation is taking the responsibility of kennelling the dogs until they have found new homes for them.
The kennelling and veterinary fees are costly as every dog is neutered and spayed and inoculated before being sent out to another home. Urgent funds are needed to pay for this. Some of these dogs that have been rescued are traumatised and the rescue organisation are appealing to the general public to support them in helping these dogs have a new lease of life.
Dave, a spokesperson for Greyhound and Lurcher Welfare and Rescue told OUR DOGS:
"Greyhounds make wonderful pets and have a very gentle nature. Contrary to the myth that greyhounds need lots of exercise they are in fact very laid-back dogs and only need two twenty minute walks a day.
"Greyhound and Lurcher Welfare and Rescue are appealing to dog lovers to rescue a greyhound if they can. Thorough homechecks will be carried out and the group hope this appeal will generate interest in this lovely breed not only for the desperate funds needed but also for lovely new homes to be provided by caring people."
The rescue organisation are also urging greyhound trainers who used to use the track to contact the rescue number should they wish their greyhounds to be re-homed.
