THE GRANDMOTHER of Ellie Lawrenson, the child killed by her uncle’s illegal Pit Bull Terrier has been charged with the girl's manslaughter.
Five year-old Ellie sustained the fatal attack in the living room of her Grandmother Jackie Simpson’s house in St Helens shortly before 4.30 am on New Year's Day.
Jackie Simpson, 46, who also received hospital treatment having sustained injuries herself during the assault, was able to restrain the dog in a run outside the home at the time. The dog was destroyed as it was found to be among the breeds prohibited by the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. A string of dog seizures in Merseyside followed under the so-called ‘dog hand in’ or amnesty.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said last Tuesday that Mrs Simpson, 46, had been charged with manslaughter. The dog’s owner, Ellie’s uncle Kiel Simpson has been charged with possession of a dangerous dog under Section 1 of the DDA.
The pair are due to appear before magistrates on April 11th.
