A PET food manufacturer in Ontario has recalled more than 60 million cans and pouches of dog and cat food sold in the US under dozens of brand names after being linked to the deaths of 10 animals.
Menu Foods, which principally makes wet food sold as store brands for US companies like Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway, is recalling only certain gravy-style pet food in cans and pouches it made from Dec. 3 to March 6.
A company statement said it had ‘failed to identify any issues with the products in question’, however it is thought the timing of the reported deaths coincided with its use of a new supplier for wheat gluten.
Menu Foods is providing information on what packages are being recalled at http://www.menufoods.com/recall/index.html.
Iams & Eukanuba’s UK operation this week issued the following statement:
‘Procter & Gamble Pet Care UK has been informed about a North American recall of certain wet (pouch and canned) cat and dog food products made by a US contract manufacturer, Menu Foods Inc. This manufacturer has produced pet foods for over 40 different brands which include Iams and Eukanuba.
‘I would like to reassure you that all Iams and Eukanuba cat and dog foods supplied in UK and Europe are NOT affected by this recall and are safe to use.
‘Iams, Eukanuba and dry Eukanuba Veterinary Diets sold in the UK are manufactured in the European facilities. Our Iams Savory Sauce and canned Eukanuba Veterinary Diets are manufactured in North America in a different plant which is not affected by this issue.
‘P&G Pet Care in North America is taking a voluntary and proactive step of recalling product out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount in the mission of Iams and Eukanuba. This voluntary action is part of the wider Menu Foods Inc. recall of over forty different brands of cat and dog products in North America – see www.menufoods.com/recall for more details.
‘The recall is an industry-wide issue in US and Canada, and P&G Pet Care is working closely with all pet care industry bodies and pet health experts in the US to provide pet owners, retailers, breeders and veterinarians with current information concerning the issue.
