Amsterdam to break records?

Issue: 13/07/2018

Next month's World Dog Show in Amsterdam could set a new record for entries at a World Dog Show.

This long anticipated show will be held at the Rai Centre in Amsterdam and looks set to be a memorable occasion for both the Dutch Kennel Club and the FCI.

Entries to the world show are still open as we go to press and the whole event already has over 31,000 entries. This includes the entries that have been made to the Benelux Winner Show and Speciality shows which take place at the same time which means this massive event is on course to be the world's largest ever dog show gathering under one roof. At Crufts this year there were just over 21,000 qualified and participating dogs

Entry for the Benelux show is already closed as the organisers reached the 6,000 limit for the show at the end of June. Last year's show in Leipzig, Germany, was seen as the biggest dog show in the world with 24,692 entries and over 31,000 dogs visiting the city as they too had a national show prior to the world event. Leipzig had of course stepped in to host the show in 2017 after the original plan had been to stage the show in Ecuador but that had to be abandoned following the earthquake in that country in 2016.

The theme for this year's show is to 'Show the world your talent.' According to Gerard Jipping, President of the World Dog Show 2018, the show will be, 'A unique, four-day, all-dog event showcasing almost every canine breed with exhibitors from all over the world, as well as numerous other activities concerning dogs in all aspects.'

There have been concerns from exhibitors following the cancellation of the Luxembourg International Dog Show in September by the authorities there because of issues concerning dogs being left in hot cars.

The organisers of the Amsterdam show were keen to reassure exhibitors and issued a short statement which said, 'We are getting some questions about our World Dog Show in Amsterdam in connection with the cancellation of the show in Luxembourg in September 2018. The Dutch Kennel Club has taken all precautions for dog welfare at our shows.

'There is a very good contact between the Dutch Ministry and the Dutch Kennel Club and the welfare of our dogs is of the utmost importance.

'There is a special Canine Care team active during the four show days. There is also a good cooperation between the show and the local police!

'You are more than welcome to enter for the WDS and specialty shows. Show the world your talent in Amsterdam.'

The Dutch Kennel Club has also responded to questions from the Dutch Green Party, GroenLinks, about the organisation and welfare of dogs at the event.

They told them in a statement that, 'all attention is focused on "Fit For Function", where the behaviour and welfare of the dogs is paramount. The Council of Management has been working for healthy and social dogs in the Netherlands for more than a century.

'The judges who inspect the dogs have instructions to pay attention to well-being, behaviour and appearance. Special instructions provide that they are not only obliged to pay attention to the health of the dogs to be tested, but also to act accordingly in their assessments, qualifications and prizes"

World Show Growth

The popularity of the FCI world shows is quite remarkable. Timing and location can be key and both Leipzig and Amsterdam are both geographically well placed to allow easy access for exhibitors and visitors. Amsterdam also has excellent air connections through Schipol Airport and this is an important factor in bringing dogs and exhibitors from all parts of the globe. The Amsterdam team have been very active promoting the show and have had stands at many other international shows such as Eurasia in Moscow, Dortmund in Germany and of course Crufts.

OUR DOGS have been working with the Dutch Kennel Club for over two years as International media Partner and have had schedules on the OUR DOGS stand also at many shows. It is thought that there will be a very large contingent of British and Irish exhibitors and visitors.

The paper will have a stand at the show and also bring you live streaming through OUR DOGS Facebook page as well as comprehensive reports and photos after the event. We hope to publish more entry statistics in next week's paper.
