Morris and Essex confirm postponement

Issue: 26/06/2020

The world famous Morris & Essex Kennel Club Dog Show in America has been postponed until 2021.
Founded in 1927 by Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, the Morris & Essex Dog Show takes place every five years.
It regularly attracts over 4,000 dogs and the show was due to be held on Thursday October 1 at Colonial Park in Somerset, New Jersey.
The President, Wayne Ferguson, issued a statement on behalf of the club which said, ‘The Morris & Essex Kennel Club would like to inform the fancy that we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our much-anticipated show to Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
‘After an exhaustive investigation, we have regretfully concluded that it simply not feasible to host an event of Morris & Essex’s scope and calibre during these difficult and unsafe times.
‘Given the challenges of air travel both domestic and international, the constraints of social distancing, the possibility that the show could be cancelled at the last minute by state officials, and of course the risk to our judges, stewards and exhibitors alike, we feel this is a prudent decision on many levels.
‘While this postponement is disappointing, it is by no means a first. During the tumultuous years of World War II, our show’s founder, Mrs. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge, also cancelled her beloved show in the face of difficult national circumstances. And once those trying times passed, Morris & Essex resumed its annual tradition, bigger and better than ever.
‘In that spirit, please take a minute to click here ( to enjoy a vintage news reel about Morris & Essex, brought to us courtesy of the AKC Library and Archives. Though the fluttering images on the screen are more than a half-century old, the excitement behind those glorious shows of Morris & Essex’s heyday is alive and well today.
‘We thank all of our members, supporters and exhibitors, both past and future, for their good wishes and support. And we will see you ringside on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, to savor what we know will be our best show yet.
‘Stay safe.’
The decision of the club was overwhelmingly supported with one poster on social media writing, ‘Sad that it’s cancelled, but the silver lining is that it’s only until 2021 and not 2025!’
This follows the news that Montgomery Kennel Club Show has also had to postpone its show until 2021.
In a statement the Chairman Bruce Schwartz said, ‘I am very sorry to inform you that due to Covid-19 we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s show.
‘Everyone’s health and safety is our primary concern. We were unable to find a reliable alternate show site and due to the cancellation of the Hatboro Show (due to the loss of their show site), we felt we had no alternative.
‘Thank you for your continued support - we look forward to seeing you on October 10, 2021.
