Viking party a huge success

It was lovely to be invited to celebrate with Melanie Raymond and Australian Shepherd Viking, their wonderful win recently at Crufts, writes Jenny Shorer-Wheeler
The room booked at the Holiday Inn, Birmingham, a stone’s throw from where the show takes place, will next month play host to more Champion Dogs, but on Saturday evening there was only one special boy waggling his way around the room to greet his many admirers.
The room was beautifully bedecked in gold and green balloons, with custom confetti and Viking hats on the tables which of course everyone donned for photographs. There were two stunning cakes, Melanie gave a very moving speech, and narrowly avoided, as she put it ‘ugly crying’, and there was a generous slice of the UK dog scene in attendance to enjoy the evenings festivities.
As a third generation exhibitor, I think our whole sport understands just what this win meant to Mel and her family. The partnership between Mel and Viking has been awe inspiring to watch over the past couple of years, and in some ways it will be a bittersweet ‘farewell’ to the UK show ring for Viking, still a young dog, although I’m sure he will go on to even more adventures in the future, which we can continue to follow from afar.
