A HOME OF THEIR OWN

A HOME OF THEIR OWN

Author - Garry Jenkins - Publisher - Bantam

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is one of the best-known animal sanctuaries in the world. Since it first opened its doors in 1860, millions of lost, abused and abandoned pets have benefited from its founder's promise that no dog or cat 'in any condition be, on any pretence whatever, refused admittance'.

Around the world Battersea is a byword for compassion and hope. It hasn't always been this way. When the Home was first established, Victorian London had little time for the canine strays that routinely wandered its grimy streets; homeless dogs found on the pavements were routinely destroyed. During its early years the Home was threatened by financial crises, threats of eviction and legal action by neighbours upset by the constant barking. Then came rabies epidemics and the Blitz. Yet the Home not only survived, it thrived.

Here is the story of this remarkable institution. It tells how the treatment of dogs and cats has evolved from Victorian times up to the present day. At its heart is the story of the remarkable characters who made Battersea what it is today, from the mysterious Mary Tealby, the remarkable founder of the Home, to Airedale Jack, the Battersea dog who became a hero in the trenches of the Great War. It is a book that will warm the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY

Author - Isabel George - Publisher - Harper Collins

Animals have accompanied man into battle since war first waged. Since those times, many stories have been told of the bears, camels, cats, dolphins, monkeys, mules, rats and other creatures that have served with the Armed Forces during both world wars and beyond. The five stories in this book represent the devotion and unquestioning loyalty of the canine companion in the darkest days of war.

From the stub-tailed Bull Terrier that became a hero of WWI, and the most decorated dog in history, after his bravery in the trenches of Flanders, to the recent heroics of a British Army Arms and Explosive dog who served for five years in Afghanistan, and the remarkable loyalty of an Iraqi stray dog who attached himself to British troops in North Port and then patrolled their camp every night, protecting them from being attacked by the vicious packs of dogs living in the desert, each is an incredible tale of wartime bravery as well as an example of inspiring commitment and courage.

THE DOG MEN OF GILLING WEST

THE DOG MEN OF GILLING WEST

Author - Geoff Milburn - Publisher - Private

The result of 30 years of genealogical sleuthing is a book which does not easily fit into any one particular genre. the main theme is four famous dog men from Gilling West who were national giants in their time. Rich Henry Brown, a co-director of Shoolbred and Co. in London sold bull dogs to royalty while Tom raper was the Prince of Slippers for the Waterloo Cup. George Raper was Britain's greatest dog judge and journalist who bred out the Yorkshire terrier in Victorian times and crossed the Atlantic on over thirty occasions. He also famously won foot races running backwards.

Although two inns, The White Swan and the Angel Inn in Gilling West, are a starting point the story moves to the Green Tree Inn in Darlington, home of Britain's earliest dog shows. There are many fascinating anecdotes of Dales incidents in times past which trace both of the author's parents to Gilling.

DOGGEREL - The Moving Memoirs of Rescue Dogs and Their Second Lives, in Poetry and Prose

DOGGEREL - The Moving Memoirs of Rescue Dogs and Their Second Lives, in Poetry and Prose

Author - Angela Patmore - Publisher - Spring Hill

Foreword by Joanna Lumley. Often rescue dogs have been thrown out by owners who could no longer afford them, found them inconvenient or naughty, or simply could not be bothered with them any more. Many have just seven miserable days behind bars before they are put to permanent sleep by council-appointed agencies. Unwanted dogs are desperate. They yelp and whine and cry out for someone to love and save them. The lucky fifty who appear in this book have emerged triumphant and wagging, often against apparently insurmountable odds, to make their new owners very happy.

The rescue charities are at crisis point. They need people to come forward and give these dogs a chance. Rescuing a dog can change not only the dog's life but yours, and this book explains how. It also tells you everything you need to know about finding the right dog at a shelter near you, and getting him or her used to you and your home. DOGGEREL is being sold in aid of the Association of Dogs' and Cats' Homes, which embraces many of the UK's animal charities large and small. Right now they need your help.

HOW THE DOG BECAME THE DOG

HOW THE DOG BECAME THE DOG

Author - mark Derr - Publisher - Gerald Duckworth & Co Ltd

That the dog evolved from the wolf is an accepted fact of evolution and history, but the question of how wolf became dog has remained a mystery, obscured by myth and legend. How the Dog Became the Dog illustrates how the dog was an evolutionary inevitability in the nature of the wolf and its human soul mate.

How the Dog Became the Dog presents the 'domestication' of the dog as a biological and cultural process that began in mutual cooperation and has taken a number of radical turns. At the end of the last Ice Age the first dogs emerged with their humans from refuges against the cold. In the eighteenth century, humans began the drive to exercise full control of dog reproduction, life, and death to complete the domestication of the wolf begun so long ago.
