LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB IN SOUTH AFRICA 1958 - 2008

Purpose

To create a permanent record of the foundation and history of the LRKC; the Labrador Retriever in South Africa; the people and the activities over the years

To identify those dogs (and their owners) that achieved greatness in various disciplines and which dogs influenced the development of the breed in South Africa.

The foreword by Mrs Rose-Marie Cabion, renowned Labrador Retriever breeder, international all breeds judge, former LRKC President and the longest standing member having joined in 1961.

The opening chapter describes the arrival of Labrador Retrievers in South Africa and first registrations with KUSA, before introducing George Jenkin, who founded the LRKC, a 2nd World War hero who dedicated his life to Labrador Retrievers and returned to England shortly after founding the LRKC.

Chapters that follow describe the early dogs and kennels that have had the most significant impact in South Africa and laid the foundation of the breed, leading on to more recent and current kennels.

Sections are devoted to regional reviews of the Labrador Retriever in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The historical tie of breeders to the SA Guide Dogs Association (SAGA) and their importance in the development of bloodlines both as Labrador Retriever service dogs and establishing the breed in South Africa.
